GLENVILLE, WV –The 鶹ƵState College Student Government Association and the 鶹Ƶcoming Committee have planned a number of activities for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends during the week of October 6th for GSC’s annual 鶹Ƶcoming celebration. This year’s theme is ‘The Rise of the Pioneer.’ Honored guests will include GSC’s former Pioneers, who will also serve collectively as Parade Marshal for the Saturday morning parade. Additionally, the Class of 1994 and Lambda Chi Alpha, Theta Xi, and Tau Kappa Epsilon members will be holding reunions.
Coronation of the 鶹Ƶcoming royalty will be held on Monday, October 6th at noon in the Heflin Administration Building Presidents Auditorium followed by the always-popular 鶹Ƶcoming bingo game for students that evening.
The Lady Pioneer Volleyball team will take on West Liberty at 7:00 p.m. in the new Waco Center on Tuesday, October 7th and a comedian, scheduled by the Student Activities office, will have students laughing later on at 9:00 p.m.
On Wednesday, October 8th the GSC Fitness Center will sponsor a 'Glow Stick 鶹Ƶcoming 5K Run/Walk' around campus beginning at 7:00 p.m. Following that, students will enjoy Black Light Roller Skating in the Mollohan Campus Community Center Ballroom.
Thursday, October 9th includes the perennial campus favorite with the Sandy Sowell Game Show and 鶹Ƶcoming Picnic from 11:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. in the Luanna T. Smith Amphitheater. Students will wrap up Thursday evening with the annual 鶹Ƶcoming Dance.
GSC graduate Joseph Pettit ('76) returns to the Robert F. Kidd Library for a showing of his artwork again this year. Stop by throughout the day on Friday, October 10th to see his paintings. Also on Friday the Men's Pioneer Basketball team will sponsor the 鶹Ƶcoming Golf Tribute Tournament at the 鶹ƵGolf Club. Friday evening the Pioneer Athletic Club will hold its annual Pioneer Steak Grill “Grillin & Chillin” fundraiser beginning at 5:00 p.m. at the I.L. & Sue Morris Stadium. Starting at 7:00 p.m. back on campus in the Amphitheater will be the Chili Cook Off progressing into the Pep Rally and Spirit Competition which start at 8:00 p.m.
The week culminates on Saturday, October 11th with the 鶹Ƶcoming Parade in downtown 鶹Ƶstarting at 10:00 a.m. All GSC alumni are then invited to enjoy a tailgate picnic in the Morris Stadium parking area beginning at 11:00 a.m. Alumni are also encouraged to sit in the special alumni seating area during the game.
Returning Lambda Chi's, Theta Xi's, and TKE's will have special tailgate tents in close proximity to the larger alumni tent in which to visit and reminisce on Saturday. Additionally there will be an opportunity that day for alumni and friends to see the college’s newest building, the Waco Center, between the hours of 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and for a short time after the game.
Pregame activities including recognition of the 鶹Ƶcoming Court, Montrose and Williams Award Presentations, and the 'Wall of Sound' Marching Band Pregame Show that will take place at 1:00 p.m. Game kickoff between the GSC Pioneers and the University of Charleston Golden Eagles happens at 1:30 p.m. Returning Pioneers will be honored during halftime of the game, followed by the Marching Band's halftime show.
The 鶹ƵState College Bluegrass Band will close out 鶹Ƶcoming Week with their annual concert featuring Bobby Osborne and the Rocky Top X-Press. Follow the sounds of fiddle and banjo to the Fine Arts Center Auditorium to hear the concert which begins at 7:00 p.m. For ticket information call (304) 462-6340.
