Tyler Czajkowski, Class of 2018

Tyler Czajkowski is a Springfield, Virginia native who graduated from �鶹��ƵState in 2018. Czajkowski was a Land Surveying major, during his time at �鶹��Ƶhe also participated in golf, football, and the land surveying club. He currently resides in Manassas, Virginia and enjoys golf, riding bikes, and camping in his free time.

Currently, Czajkowski is employed as a survey technician and is awaiting results from the Fundamentals of Surveying Test. Prior to this, Czajkowski worked for Axis Land Surveying in Spotsylvania, VA as well as Land Design Consultants, Inc. – also in Virginia. Notably, he was awarded with second place in the VAS (Virginia Association of Surveyors) Plat contest in 2020. One of Czajkowski’s most enjoyable parts of his job as a surveyor is “Seeing places so deep in the woods and so old that very few humans have ever seen before…” He says to put such on paper is even cooler.

When asked about his time at �鶹��ƵState Czajkowski says “GSC gave me some the most memorable times in my life..” He states he was given tools to excel in his career surrounded by some of the best people there ever was. “Momma, look at me now!” he says.

Alex Shifler, Class of 2009

Alex Shifler (’09) is a Clear Spring, Maryland native who is currently residing in Martinsburg, West Virginia. Shifler was a Land Surveying major, currently employed with Fox & Associates. During his time as a student, Shifler was a member of the �鶹��ƵTrack Team, participating in Cross Country.

Notably, he was elected as the Berkley County Surveyor where he served for nine months as well as the county surveyor for the Washington County Board of Commissioners in Maryland. He was also appointed Chapter Chair of the Eastern Panhandle Chapter of West Virginia Society of Professional Surveyors.

When asked what �鶹��ƵState means to him Shifler says, “GSC was the place that allowed me to explore hobbies and vocation meanwhile building a social network that is still used today.”

Jimmy Jenkins, Class of 1995 and 2008

Jimmy Jenkins (’95 & ’08) is a Natural Resource Management and Forest Technology alumnus from Little Birch, WV.

Jenkins is employed by Weyerhaeuser, where he has worked for 24 years. As a student, Jimmy was involved in the GSU Forestry Club. Jimmy is also the Chair of GSU’s Forest Technology Advisory Committee, which provides insight from industry and employers on the improvement of subject material, arrangement of courses, and provides contacts for alumni. Mr. Jenkins has also supported the Department of Land Resources in securing grants from Weyerhaeuser, that assist with making sure students have access to new equipment. 

When asked, What Does �鶹��ƵState Mean to You, Jimmy replied that “GSC is a great college that prepares students in their chosen discipline to succeed in life’s opportunities for a better future.”

Jenkins’ son, Harrison Jenkins is also a graduate of the Natural Resource Management and Forest Technology programs of GSU.

Thomas Nicholson, Class of 2004 and 2005

Thomas Nicholson (’04 and ’05) is a Natural Resource Management and Forest Technology alumnus from Exchange, WV who is currently residing in Moravian Falls, NC. In his spare time, he enjoys outdoor sports and recreation and home-remodeling.

Nicholson is employed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as an Operations Project Manager at the W. Kerr Scott Reservoir in Wilkesboro, NC. The W. Kerr Scott Reservoir is a progressive facility that is nationally and internationally known for mountain biking, kayaking, fishing, and camping in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains where NASCAR and Lowes were born. Thomas has worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for over 15 years, starting as a seasonal worker in 2002.

While working for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Nicholson has been awarded the Lakes and Rivers Division Natural Resource Stewardship Employee of the Year, Huntington District Recreation Employee of the Year, Star of Life Award, and was a Project of the Year team member.

As a student at �鶹��ƵState, Thomas was President, Vice-President and Secretary for the Forestry Club and participated in Track and Cross-Country. Speaking of �鶹��ƵState, Thomas says “It was such wonderful place to go to school. The smallness was a benefit, but the quality of the program helped me succeed in my career and grow to where I am today.”

We are pleased to feature Thomas in the Department of Land Resources Alumni Spotlight and are proud to call him an alumnus of �鶹��ƵState.

Quincy Band, Class of 2019

Quincy Band is a 2019 �鶹��ƵState graduate from Elkins, West Virginia who is currently residing in Escanaba, Michigan. Quincy obtained a Natural Resource Management degree with a concentration in Forest Technology while in attendance at �鶹��ƵState. He also participated in the Science Fiction and Fantasy Guild during his time as a student. 

Quincy has been working for the US Forest Service as a Supervisory Forester on the Region 9 Timber Strike Team since 2019. The Strike Team is a traveling timber crew that helps local units meet their yearly timber production targets by doing timber presale work. With the Strike Team, Quincy has had the chance to work on a project that aims to allow Lidar data to be used to accurately determine the Basal area of a stand and other vital pre-cruise data. This will allow inventories of a stand of timber to be done with less fieldwork and be far more time effective and efficient.

When talking about �鶹��ƵState, Quincy says “GSC to me, was a great place to gain the degree and knowledge I needed to do the work I love. It was a place where I was able to learn from great teachers and mentors in a personal and caring environment that is lacking in some of the bigger schools.”

Stanley Wageman, Class of 1990 and 1992

Stanley Wageman (’90 & ’92) is a Forest Technology and Business Management alum from Hurricane, WV.  While in attendance at �鶹��ƵState, Wageman participated in the Forestry Club in addition to his studies.  After his time at Glenville, Wageman obtained his WV Commercial Pesticide Applicator license and became a Certified Arborist by the International Society of Arboriculture. 

Wageman currently resides in Cross Lanes, WV and has worked for the Appalachian Power Company as the Region Forestry Supervisor in Charleston, WV for 28 years.  Some of Wageman’s career highlights include being on the Board of Directors for the Utility Arborist Association, being a Certification Liaison for the Mid Atlantic Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture (MAC-ISA), and being a past member of the Board of Directors for the MAC-ISA. 

In his free time, Wageman likes to do woodworking and gardening.  He also enjoys spending time coaching his children and watching them compete in sports.  

When asked what does �鶹��ƵState mean to you, Stanley replied, “�鶹��ƵState College was a fun and friendly place to get an education.  GSC provided an excellent education creating the opportunity for a successful career.  It also gave me lifelong friendships I still cherish today.”
